Borane Reagents

Borane products are one family of very important reagents for asymmetric reductions and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, by which a variety of functional groups such as alcohols and amines can be introduced.

Borane reagents, specifically borane complexes, substituted borohydride reagents and chiral borane compounds, can be available at commercial scale, and thus have dramatically expanded their application in process chemistry. Borane reagents also have been utilized in the production of pharmaceuticals, polymers, electronic components (such as OLED) and printed circuit boards.

 Borane (BH3)

Borane is an electrophilic reducing agent but in nature it is not of nucleophility or basicity. Its electrophilicity is relative to its Lewis acid character due to its unoccupied orbital. Because of the electrophilic nature of borane and the coordinating ability with the electron-rich center of many functional groups, borane usually leads to a selective or a specific reduction.
